Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday condemned the deadly twin bombings on Moscow’s metro system and sent messages of condolence to the leaders of Russia.
Netanyahu’s office said he wrote to President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, telling them that Israel knows well what it is to be the target of such attacks.
“We condemn the terror attacks, which once again caused such awful suffering to innocent civilians,” Netanyahu said in a statement. “We stand with you, united … in the struggle against terror, which threatens all humanity.”
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman also sent condolences and said no country was safe from extremist attacks.
A foreign ministry statement quoted Lieberman, an immigrant from the former Soviet Union, as telling his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in a message that combatting such attacks must be a priority for every government.
“The fight against terror is a global mission which should be at the top of the international agenda, because no country is immune from attack by extremists,” Lieberman said.
Two female suicide bombers killed at least 38 people during morning rush hour in Moscow. Russia’s FSB security service linked the bombers to militant Islamist groups in the North Caucasus.
